The transgender person who chooses to have breast augmentation (commonly referred to as "top surgery") takes a major step in establishing a feminine identity. This is a procedure in which plastic surgeons like Dr. Javad Sajan shape the breasts to achieve a more feminine structure using breast implants.

Understanding MTF Breast Augmentation

The surgical procedure for male-to-female (MTF) transgender breast augmentation is similar to traditional breast augmentation. It involves similar decision-making processes and surgical techniques.

One primary concern the MTF patient may have is whether there will be enough chest skin to accommodate the newly-enlarged breast area. The nipple-areola complex placement in MTF patients requires special consideration to properly create a feminine shape. The genetic male nipple-areola complex is more lateral and smaller in size when compared the genetic female. Dr. Sajan will help you decide on the size of implants to match your natural anatomy, as well as any adjunct procedures.

Are you a candidate for MTF breast augmentation?

When performed correctly, MTF breast augmentation is a terrific procedure that can enhance your self-esteem, while aligning your body with your true identity. However, it's not right for every patient.

To be considered an ideal candidate, you should be in good general health and possess realistic goals for the procedure. The best candidates for a Seattle MTF top surgery are over 18 years of age, have a well-documented history of gender dysphoria and are fully committed to the procedure and their transition. During your initial consultation, Dr. Sajan will spend a great deal of time with you discussing your goals, so that he can help you determine whether or not MTF breast augmentation is in your best interest.

What to expect during your procedure

Your top surgery will take place on an outpatient basis in our state-licensed surgery center. An overnight hospital stay will not be necessary. The anesthesiologist will administer a general (deep sleep) anesthesia and you will be monitored throughout the surgery and recovery for your safety and comfort. The actual procedure should take about two hours.

Dr. Sajan will make an incision in one of three possible locations – the inframammary crease (below your natural breast), the peri-areola (around the darker-skinned area that surrounds the nipple), the umbilicus (around the bellybutton) or the axillary (an incision made under the arm). Your implants will be placed and the incisions closed with sutures. After the procedure, Dr. Sajan will apply dressings to the incision wounds, and you will be asked to wear a compression bandage for a period of time to reduce swelling.

You may experience swelling, bruising, and soreness following your MTF top surgery. These resultant conditions should resolve in about three to eight weeks. Though all of our clients will have a unique experience, most are able to resume easy-level activities within seven to ten days (including driving) and strenuous activities within about one month. The results of your surgery will be immediately noticeable and should continue to evolve over the coming months as your swelling resolves. (You should be able to determine your final bra size between four and eight weeks.

During your follow-up appointments, Dr. Sajan will give you detailed information about your recovery process, oral and topical medications and activity schedule. It is important that you carefully follow these instructions to optimize your recovery process and results.
