Fat transfer surgery, also known as fat grafting or autologous fat grafting, is a surgical procedure used to transfer fat cells drawn from your own body to another site on your body. In essence, you are donating from yourself to yourself. Fat transfer is an exacting process that skilled surgeons like Dr. Javad Sajan use to reshape or fill out some aspect of a patient's body.

Many Applications

Unlike some cosmetic procedures that focus on only one area of the body fat transfer is a two-part procedure that can be used to augment and/or reshape different areas of the body, including:

  • Filling in facial scars (like those caused by severe acne)
  • Plumping out sunken cheeks
  • Adding volume to the face, buttocks, breasts, or the backs of your hands
  • Filling in facial lines and wrinkles

Your Fat Transfer Procedure

The basic steps of fat transfer involve preparing the donor and recipient sites on your body for the procedure and administering medications for your comfort. You may be given a general (deep sleep) anesthesia or a combination of intravenous sedation and anesthesia depending on the area being treated and the extent of the procedure. Most fat transfer procedures are done on an outpatient basis in our state-licensed surgery center. An overnight hospital stay is not typically necessary.

Once the donor site is prepared, Dr. Sajan makes a micro incision into the site, inserts a fine tube called a cannula, and using a liposuction procedure, extracts the fat grafts/cells from the site. The grafts are placed in a centrifuge system to extract excess fluids from the fat grafts.

The graft site of your body also has been prepped and a micro-incision is made. The purified fat graft is injected through another cannula into the recipient site and the injection steps are repeated until the desired results are achieved.

Once the injection process is done, the micro-incisions will be closed and bandaged. Time required for a procedure depends on the treatment area. A butt lift fat transfer requires a large volume of fat grafts whereas filling in the glabella lines (the deep frown lines on a patient's face) will require significantly less volume.

The results of a fat transfer procedure are often nearly immediate although the healing times may vary radically depending on the procedure(s) done. Dr. Sajan and his team will take you carefully through the pre- and post-procedure and recovery steps. You may be given topical and oral medications to help you manage any resultant swelling and discomfort. You will be shown how to take care of your donor and recipient incisions. In some instances, you may be asked to wear a compression garment for a period of time to help reduce swelling and support the treated area through its healing stages.

It will be very important for you to carefully follow all instructions related to the medication, care, recovery, and follow-up appointments. The set of instructions Dr. Sajan provides to you are to help you recover comfortably and quickly, and to facilitate the best possible outcome of your procedure.
