Liposuction is a popular procedure used since the late 1970s to remove unwanted fat. When it is performed by a skilled provider like internationally recognized plastic surgeon, Dr. Javad Sajan, our Seattle liposuction procedure can be a viable fat reduction option for many patients.

Targeting Unwanted Fat

Tummy Tuck vs Liposuction

Fat seems to target certain body areas, sometimes leaving substantial deposits in the face, neck, chin, love handles, abdomen, waist, hips, buttocks, inner and outer thighs, calves, ankles, and upper arms. When fat deposits target one or more areas on your body, you may want to consider liposuction treatment to remove those deposits. While liposuction should not be viewed as a weight management plan, it can be partnered with healthy food choices and activity to support ongoing post-treatment success.

Is Liposuction Right for You?

It's important to note that this procedure is not for everyone. The ideal candidate is in very good general health, within 25 pounds of his or her ideal body weight, and wants to address stubborn pockets of fat that are unresponsive to diet and exercise.

In addition, it's important to have realistic expectations for what the procedure can accomplish. Liposuction is not a weight loss surgery, and it won't do anything for stretch marks and excess skin. Rather, it's a body contouring procedure that can remove small deposits of fat that are detracting from your overall physique.

Furthermore, there are certain patients who are not considered ideal candidates for liposuction, including:

  • Pregnant or breastfeeding women
  • Individuals on blood-thinning medications
  • Individuals who are allergic to lidocaine
  • Patients with chronic medical conditions, such as diabetes and high blood pressure

Types of Liposuction

Dr. Sajan offers a variety of liposuction procedures. During your initial consultation, he will help you determine which of the following approaches in your best interest based on your interests and goals.

Traditional liposuction

Traditional liposuction involves creating a tiny incision and inserting a cannula directly into the treatment area. Through that opening, Dr. Sajan will inject fluid and move the cannula back and forth to break up and remove unwanted fat.

Tumescent liposuction

With tumescent liposuction, Dr. Sajan will begin by injecting a special solution into the treatment area. This solution will cause the fat cells to swell so they're easier to remove. In addition, the solution shrinks blood vessels and contains a local anesthetic, ensuring a comfortable procedure with very minimal risks.

VASER liposuction

A minimally-invasive liposuction procedure, VASER can remove fat, sculpt targeted areas throughout the body and tighten lax skin. Dr. Sajan tends to recommend this approach for patients who want to achieve an enhanced body contour and sculpted muscles.

SmartLipo

SmartLipo is a minimally-invasive, laser-assisted approach that involves using laser wavelengths to melt away stubborn fat deposits, tone the body and tighten skin. It's an extremely safe and effective procedure that leads to lost inches and a rapid recovery period.

Abdomen

Perhaps the most common area for liposuction, the abdomen is particularly prone to a buildup of unwanted fat.

Arms

Many of Dr. Sajan’s liposuction patients feel self-conscious regarding their upper arms, preventing them from wearing sleeveless clothing.

Back

Back liposuction is actually an area where Dr. Sajan can be most aggressive, as this area has highly elastic skin that responds well to the procedure.

Buttocks

While a sizeable butt can be a covetable quality, some simply patients feel they have too much "junk in the trunk."

Flanks

A very popular treatment area, the flanks are among the most visible areas of excess fat.

Hips

Usually treated in conjunction with the flanks, the hips require precise contouring to ensure a seamless transition down to the legs.

Chest

For men who feel their chest has accumulated too much fat, chest liposuction can minimize prominence.

Neck

By fine-tuning the neck and chin, Dr. Sajan can produce a more elegant transition from the head to the body.

Thighs

For patients who feel their thighs are too large or disproportionate to the rest of their body, Dr. Sajan’s thigh liposuction may be the perfect solution.

Calves & Ankles

Dr. Sajan uses his liposuction prowess to sculpt a smooth lower leg, with an ankle that is the correct proportional thickness.

About Liposuction Procedure

You can expect your Seattle liposuction procedure to be performed under general anesthesia or sedation in our state-licensed surgery center. Once the anesthesia/sedation has taken effect, Dr. Sajan will make a micro-incision at a treatment site and insert a suction device into the opening. Using a suction pump or large syringe, he will remove excess fat at the site. The time your procedure takes will depend on how many areas are being treated and the amount of fat to be removed.

You will notice some changes to your body's contours following the procedure but the results will become more evident in the ensuing weeks. Some swelling, bruising, and soreness are common following your procedure. You may be asked to wear a compression garment for a period of time following surgery to help control swelling. Compression also helps your skin "mold" to the new contours of your body. Dr. Sajan will provide detailed instructions for your recovery and may recommend or prescribe topical or oral medications to help with the healing process. Carefully follow the doctor's post-surgery instructions and follow-up appointment schedule to facilitate your healing process.

Recovery following liposuction is generally fairly quick, although each patient's healing process is different. Expect that you may feel comfortable enough to return to work a few days following your procedure and resume your normal activities within about two weeks. After the healing process, you will see exactly why Dr. Sajan is believed to perform some of best liposuction Seattle has to offer.

Results

Immediately after your procedure, you will see a visible improvement in the treatment area. Although swelling will obscure your final outcome, you should see a more streamlined body contour underneath those effects.

It will take about three months for the swelling and bruising to subside, and up to six months for your skin to adjust to your new, smaller figure. As such, it can take several months until you are able to see the final results of your procedure. At that point, many of our patients report a more contoured physique, increased muscle tone and less cellulite, in addition to an overall more attractive appearance.

Maintaining Your Liposuction Results

Although liposuction typically results in a slimmer and more contoured figure, it won't prevent you from gaining weight moving forward. Although the removed fat cells can't regenerate, you will be able to gain weight in other areas. As such, you will have to continue to exercise and maintain a proper diet after the procedure. Dr. Sajan recommends following a healthy diet with lean protein, fresh produce and whole grains, and reducing your intake of processed foods. He also recommends regular physical activity once your body has healed, and is an advocate of jogging, biking, yoga, swimming and similar activities.

What Risks Are Associated with Liposuction?

All cosmetic surgeries come along with inherent risks, and liposuction is no different. The most common risks associated with this procedure include:

  • Infection
  • Anesthesia complications
  • Blood clots
  • Excessive fluid loss
  • Fluid accumulation
  • Numbness

Fortunately, you can drastically reduce your risk of developing one of the above complications by doing two things:

1. Choose your surgeon carefully.

Select a seasoned plastic surgeon, like Dr. Sajan, who will perform your procedure responsibly and safely, and will go to great lengths to ensure that you enjoy a complication-free experience.

2. Follow your surgeon's instructions.

Always follow your surgeon's pre- and post-operative instructions precisely. Stop smoking, don't use medications that can exacerbate bleeding, adhere to reduced activity recommendations, wear your compression garment as directed and get plenty of rest. In general, listen to your surgeon every step of the way, and you should be able to avoid the complications that are associated with liposuction.

Combining Liposuction with Other Procedures

Depending on your cosmetic objectives, you may discover that it's in your best interest to combine your liposuction with a complementary body contouring treatment that can enhance your results and deliver a completely streamlined new figure. In fact, many of our patients in Seattle and surrounding areas undergo a tummy tuck, thigh lift, arm lift or breast reduction in addition to liposuction.

These additional procedures allow you to further target unwanted fat and excess skin in your specific problem areas, achieving results that wouldn't be possible with just one surgery. For example, by combining liposuction with a tummy tuck or thigh lift, you not only remove unwanted fat from these key areas, but you also have the ability to tighten lax muscles and address sagging skin.

Transforming Your Body with Liposuction

Many patients worldwide have benefitted from liposuction surgery. However, it is important to remember that while liposuction removes fat, it cannot prevent you from gaining weight. It is a body contouring process that can produce gratifying results, especially when combined with a healthy lifestyle.
