Gynecomastia, the medical term for male breast enlargement, refers to the development of excess tissue in the male breast. An embarrassing and emotionally stressful condition, gynecomastia gives men the appearance of having a feminine chest. When this occurs, many men turn to one of the best plastic surgeons in Seattle, Dr. Javad Sajan, for help surgically reducing their breasts to a more masculine and proportionate level. Visit Dr. Sajan for some of the best results from gynecomastia Seattle patients can rely on.

Understanding Gynecomastia

Gynecomastia is a condition that can occur at any age. It commonly occurs during the teenage years, resulting from fluctuating hormones. In adult men, it may develop as testosterone levels decline and the body fat ratio increases. Gynecomastia may be hereditary, or it can occur as the result of obesity, hormonal changes, or various medications (including prescribed medications, OTC herbal drugs, and some recreational drugs).

Although gynecomastia is a benign condition, it can cause emotional discomfort and erode self-confidence. Many men with gynecomastia in Seattle are reluctant to remove their shirts in the presence of others, or hide under baggy sweatshirts in order to conceal that extra chest tissue. Gynecomastia surgery can provide a number of benefits, including:

  • Reduction of breast size
  • Flatten, reshape, and enhance chest contours
  • Reposition stretched, sagging areolas (the dark skin surrounding the nipples)
  • Treat puffy nipples
  • Remove excess breast tissue and fat
  • Tighten remaining skin
  • Balance asymmetrical breasts
  • Improve overall body proportions

  • Possess enlarged male breasts that are no longer growing
  • Be unable to reduce the size of your breasts through diet and exercise
  • Be a non-smoker and in good general health

Gynecomastia Before & After

Preparing for Your Male Breast Reduction Surgery

If you decide to move forward with male breast reduction surgery with one of Seattle's best plastic surgeons, Dr. Javad Sajan, there are certain pre-operative steps you'll need to take. In the weeks leading up to the procedure, you'll need to avoid excessive sun exposure and medications and supplements that could increase your risk of bleeding during surgery and recovery, such as ibuprofen. In addition, you'll need to plan to have a family member or friend accompany you to and from the procedure, as you will not be able to drive yourself home. All of these steps will be discussed with you in-depth during your initial consultation with Dr. Sajan, to ensure that you're fully prepared for surgery.

Gynecomastia Surgery

The specifics of your gynecomastia surgery will depend on your unique condition. For example, many men feature primarily excess fatty tissue. In such cases, Dr. Sajan will likely make micro-incisions and use liposuction techniques to remove fat deposits through a cannula (thin, hollow tube). This option is preferred for many men, because it results in a rapid recovery and minimal, well-hidden scars.

If your condition is related to glandular or excess breast tissue or excess skin, Dr. Sajan will use an excision technique to correct the gynecomastia. This excision-based procedure may also necessitate surgical reduction of the areola and/or repositioning of the nipple in order to create a more masculine contour. Sometimes, a gynecomastia surgery includes both liposuction and excision procedures.

After all surgical procedures are completed, Dr. Sajan will close your incisions and bandage the area. Before you return home, you may be asked to wear a compression garment for a period of time to minimize swelling and support your chest during the healing process.

Recovery

Your recovery from your Seattle male breast reduction surgery will depend on the techniques used. For example, if you exclusively underwent liposuction, you can generally look forward to a rapid healing process. Conversely, if you required surgical excision of excess glandular tissue, you will likely experience a slightly longer recovery period.

Immediately after your procedure, a friend or family member will need to drive you home. You can expect bruising, swelling and tenderness around your chest, and Dr. Sajan will ensure that you have access to pain medication as needed to manage your discomfort. Within about a week, and with Dr. Sajan's approval, you should be able to return to work. However, it's important to keep all of your post-operative appointments, so he can evaluate your progress and provide you with a custom timeline based on your unique recovery. Although all of our patients in Seattle and surrounding areas will have a unique experience, most are able to return to vigorous physical activity and heavy lifting within several weeks.

In terms of results, you can expect your reduced chest and new masculine contours to be visible immediately after surgery. In addition, they will continue to improve during the weeks and months following your procedure, as your swelling subsides.
