Blepharoplasty is the reconstruction or surgical repair of an eyelid. It is done to improve the appearance of the upper or lower eyelids, or both. Internationally recognized plastic surgeon, Dr. Javad Sajan, is skilled at working with the delicate tissue surrounding your eyes. Whether you're coming in from over seas or from our hometown, Seattle, visit Dr. Sajan for some of the best results in eyelid surgery Seattle is proud to lay claim to.

What Eyelid Surgery Can Do for You

During the normal maturation process, eyelid tissue stretches and supportive muscles weaken. Gradually, fat layers that cushion the eyeball within the skull may shift, causing fatty deposits to accumulate both above and below the eyelids. The resultant sagging of eyebrows and upper lids and bags under the eyes can create a drooping and aged appearance in both men and women. Sagging skin also can reduce peripheral vision. Blepharoplasty can alleviate a number of those eyelid problems. Removal of excess skin and fat can reduce sagging, giving our Seattle patients an alert and youthful eye lift and improving their field of vision.

Is Blepharoplasty Right for You?

Although eyelid surgery in Seattle is highly sought after among Dr. Sajan's patients, it's not for everyone. To be considered an ideal candidate, you should be in good general health, a non-smoker and possess realistic expectations for the procedure. In addition, you should not have an eye infection or disease, drooping eyebrows, dry eye syndrome or a serious infection or illness such as thyroid problems or Grave's disease.

Your Eyelid Surgery

As with all procedures he performs, Dr. Sajan will develop a surgical plan that is tailored to your needs and health. The procedure will be performed on an outpatient basis in our state-licensed surgical center, usually under a general (deep sleep-inducing) anesthesia that will completely block any pain.

Upper eyelid surgery is a relatively straightforward surgery. To begin, Dr. Sajan will create a fine incision in the crease above each eye, ensuring that any resulting scars are well-hidden within your natural contours. Through those openings, he will remove the excess skin that's causing your eyelids to droop and sag. He will then tighten and reposition the underlying muscles, and remove any fat that may be contributing to excessive puffiness. He will then lift the remaining skin, taking special care to achieve a more youthful expression without overcorrecting and creating an unnatural appearance. Once your desired look has been created, he will close the incisions with fine sutures.

Lower eyelid surgery mainly focuses on removing fatty deposits that tend to accumulate in this area as our patients age. To begin, Dr. Sajan will make a very discreet incision in the lower eyelashes. Through that opening, he will simultaneously remove fatty tissue and sagging skin, revealing a smoother and firmer eye area. If you also suffer from lax muscles around your eyes, Dr. Sajan can reposition and tighten them as well, before carefully closing the incisions to minimize scarring.

Eyelid Lift Recovery

Immediately after your procedure, you can expect the area around your eyes and incisions to be red and swollen. You may also notice problems with your eyes, including excessive tearing, dry eye, sensitivity to light and blurred vision. It's important to note that these effects are common and temporary, and should resolve on their own fairly quickly.

For the first few days, you'll need to apply ointment to your incisions. Cold compresses can help reduce swelling and eye drops can keep your eyes lubricated. In the first week, it's important to avoid activities that can dry your eyes, like watching television, wearing contacts and using a computer. Once about seven days have passed, Dr. Sajan will have you return to his Seattle office so he can evaluate your progress and remove your stitches.

Most of our patients feel well enough to return to work about ten days after their eyelid lift surgery. With that said, it will still be several more weeks until you're fully recovered, so it's important to ease back into your daily routine. Avoid bending, heavy lifting, vigorous exercise and crying, as these activities can increase blood flow to your eyes and impair your healing process.

Eyelid Surgery Results

While it will take several weeks for the final results of your blepharoplasty to appear, the wait will be worth it. In most cases, you can expect your face to appear naturally refreshed and more alert. If your eyelids had impaired your field of vision, that problem should be resolved as well.

Although the excess skin, fatty deposits and lax muscles around your eyes were removed, it's important to note that you will continue to age normally. As such, wrinkling and looseness may reappear over time, and you may require a touch-up procedure in the future to maintain your new look. However, Dr. Sajan and his team will provide you with tips on how to protect the sensitive and delicate skin around your eyes on a daily basis, so you can delay future aging for as long as possible.
