Ethnic rhinoplasty is the surgical alteration of the nose to give it a more aesthetically pleasing appearance and/or function while preserving your ethnic characteristics. Internationally recognized Seattle rhinoplasty surgeon, Dr. Javad Sajan, has worked with clients from around the world and all ethnic backgrounds.

Changing Trends

Ethnic rhinoplasty is one of the cosmetic procedures most frequently requested by African-American, Hispanic-American, Middle Eastern, and Asian clients. Both women and an increasing number of men are scheduling ethnic rhinoplasty.

Historically, patients sought cosmetic surgery to minimize specific ethnic features in favor of a more westernized appearance. However, patients now choose cosmetic surgery for subtle enhancement of their facial features while maintaining their ethnicity. Rhinoplasty may also be requested to reduce orresolve breathing difficulties related to existingor trauma-induced structural misalignment or obstructions.

Preparing for Ethnic Rhinoplasty

Because of the unique properties of ethnic skin you may be asked to use certain pretreatments such as hydroquinone and Retin-A to help reduce the risk of scarring. This pretreatment period can last between two and six weeks. Microdermabrasion is sometimes recommended to open the pores and clean the nose prior to rhinoplasty. You also may be asked to stop using certain astringent and other topical skincare products in the surgical area. Dr. Sajan and his team will help you with each preparatory step.

Your Surgery Experience

Ethnic rhinoplasty may be done as an open procedure in which incisions are made in the columella (the vertical strip of skin that separates the nostrils) in order to access the underlying nasal structures. Or your surgery may be a closed procedure with incisions made inside your nose. Depending on exactly what alterations are to be done, extra cartilage may be grafted to the bones or some rearrangement of existing bone and cartilage may be done. Dr. Sajan will explain these procedural aspects to you.

Rhinoplasty surgery rarely requires an overnight hospital stay. It usually is done on an outpatient basis in our state-licensed surgery center. The complexity of reconstructive work for your rhinoplasty will determine the type of sedation to be used. Your surgery may require that you receive general anesthesia (to induce a deep sleep), or a combination of local anesthesia and intravenous sedation (to block pain and produce a lighter level of sleep). You will be monitored and kept comfortable at all times during the procedure and recovery.

Rewarding Results

The most rewarding results of ethnic rhinoplasty come from achieving a balance of facial features and function while honoring your own natural ethnic beauty. Contact Dr. Sajan and learn how ethnic rhinoplasty can benefit you.
