Breast augmentation surgery (also known as augmentation mammoplasty) is a surgical procedure that can enhance your appearance. Board certified plastic surgeons like Dr. Javad Sajan use breast implants to increase and redefine your natural breast shape and size. Visit Dr. Sajan for some of the best results from breast augmentation Seattle can lay claim to.

The shape, volume, and balance of your breasts affect a significant part of your self-image – what makes you feel attractive, sensual, and womanly. But heredity, time, and life events sometimes alter your breasts in ways you may find less pleasing.

Some of our patients have never felt happy with their natural breast size. Others have lost breast tissue volume after pregnancy and breastfeeding. For some women, mammary development in puberty left them with breasts of significantly different sizes, and other women feel that their breasts aren't well-proportioned with the rest of their bodies. Breast augmentation can help address these concerns.

Benefits of breast augmentation include:

  • A better-proportioned, more attractive figure
  • Correction and balance of asymmetrical breasts
  • Restoration of breast size and shape following weight loss, pregnancy, and nursing
  • Increased breast fullness and projection
  • A figure that better fills out clothing
  • Enhanced self-confidence and self-image

What Happens During Breast Augmentation Surgery?

Seattle Breast Augmentation

When you undergo breast augmentation in Seattle with Dr. Sajan, your procedure will take place on an outpatient basis in our state-licensed surgery center. To begin, an anesthesiologist will administer either a general (deep sleep) anesthesia or a combination of intravenous sedation and anesthesia to ensure your comfort and safety. Throughout the entire procedure and recovery period, you will be monitored closely to prevent any complications from occurring.

Incision Types

Dr. Sajan will make incisions in inconspicuous areas of your breasts to minimize visible scarring. (Some incision choices will be based on the type of implants used and the degree of enlargement planned.) Once the incision has been made, a breast implant will be inserted in a "pocket" under either the pectoral muscle or directly behind the breast tissue (over the pectoral muscle). The positioning depends on several factors, including: Dr. Sajan's recommendations, the degree of planned enlargement, your body type, and the type of implant being used. Dr. Sajan will close the incisions with fine dissolvable sutures.

Immediately after surgery, you will be instructed to wear a compression garment for a period of time to reduce swelling and facilitate the healing process. During the first few days and weeks, swelling and discoloration in the area are a normal occurrence. In addition, you may feel breast tightness and sensitivity to touch, and raising your arms may be somewhat difficult for a short while. However, all of these effects should be manageable with the pain medication prescribed by Dr. Sajan, and in most cases will resolve in the days and weeks following surgery.

Before you leave our Seattle surgical center, Dr. Sajan will provide you with detailed instructions for your recovery period, including:

  • How to care for your incision areas
  • The topical and oral medications you'll need to take
  • The recovery timeline you can expect
  • When you will be able to resume your normal routine
  • When to schedule your follow-up appointments

Carefully adhering to all of these guidelines will help you through your recovery and optimize your breast implant results.

Recovery After Breast Augmentation

Recovery after breast augmentation requires 1-2 weeks of downtime, and taking it easy for the next month or so.

Week 1

You will be able to return home with a friend or family member after your procedure. You will have a compression bandage around your chest to support and protect your breasts and to minimize swelling. During the first few days after breast augmentation recovery, it is best to have someone stay with you and assist you, as you will not be able to raise your arms over your head or lift anything.

Weeks 2-3

Within a week or two, most women return to their normal, lighter daily activities and can return to sedentary work. Be sure not to lift anything over five pounds and continue to avoid lifting your arms above your shoulders. Avoid all vigorous exercise or physical activities.

Weeks 4-6

During these weeks, the swelling will continue to go down and you will get the go ahead from Dr. Sajan to resume strenuous exercise and activities. At this point you are considered fully healed, but keep in mind that the final steps are still to come, more slowly.

During the next few weeks or months

The swelling will continue to slowly subside and the settling of the breast implants will continue during this time. Once this period is complete, the implants will have settled into their final position. Continue to enjoy your shapely, curvy and beautiful breasts!

Saline or Silicone Breast Implants?

Breast Augmentation Surgery Seattle

You would probably agree that it's a big decision to get a breast augmentation. Another major decision you have to make is whether or not you will choose silicone or saline implants. Silicone or saline: what's the difference?

Silicone Breast Implants

Silicone breast implants consist of a silicone outer shell that is filled with a cohesive silicone gel. You have the option to choose smooth or textured shells. A smooth breast implant is just as it sounds. The outer silicone shell is smooth and shiny. They usually move freely as they do not attach to the surrounding body tissue. Textured breast implants are rough with an irregular outer surface. Some liken the surface to sand paper that has a rubbery quality. They usually move less, as the texture attaches more to the surrounding body tissue.

The smooth silicone shell is described as the softest breast implant option that most closely mimics the natural breast tissue. The smooth shell is more mobile, but this can sometimes lead to implant displacement over time. The textured silicone breast implants are used to try and eliminate this implant displacement, but the textured shell is sometimes more noticeable, and has been known to leak or ripple more often than the smooth shell.

Pros

Looks and feels more realistic

Less chance of rippling

Lifetime warranty from the manufacturer

Cons

You might not notice if they leak

Scar is slightly larger

Only way to detect implant rupture is with an MRI

Saline Breast Implants

Saline breast implants consist of silicone shells that are filled with sterile salt water, or saline. Saline implants can be inserted through a smaller incision, which is desirable for some patients. Once the implant is inserted into the proper place, it is inflated with saline. Some patients compare saline implants to water balloons due to their shape and texture. Saline implants are also approved for women as young as 18, which can make them more appealing for some patients. Ultimately, you should discuss your implant selection with Dr. Sajan to find the right choice for your body and lifestyle.

Pros

Less expensive

Adjustable

10-year warranty from the manufacturer

Cons

Looks and feels less real

More likely to have rippling

Body size, and shape of implant are both important factors to consider when you choose which type of breast implant shell you need. It is important to discuss this with Dr. Sajan as well. He will be able to help you make an informed decision about which type of breast implant you should get. Your health, body, and lifestyle should all be considered when you choose the implant that is right for you.

Risks of Breast Implant Rippling?

On occasion, when someone has a breast augmentation or reconstruction, rippling can develop. Rippling is the term for wrinkles or ridge-like formations in the implant that show through the skin. The more tissue available to cover the implant after a breast augmentation, the less likely rippling will occur, so fuller women tend to experience less rippling.

Reducing risk?

There are a few precautions you can take to reduce your risk of rippling. As mentioned before, saline implants are more likely to cause rippling. Women with a more modest amount of breast tissue have a higher risk of rippling, and overfilled implants are not as likely to ripple as under filled implants. Smooth, as opposed to textured, breast implants are less likely to cause rippling, and you can reduce the risk for rippling by having the implant placed under the muscle.

How to fix rippling?

Unfortunately, once rippling occurs from your breast augmentation, there are no at-home remedies. No massages, creams, or stretches can reduce the appearance of this complication. If you notice your breast augmentation has developed rippling, you should consult Dr. Sajan about one of the following remedies:

  • Replace your implant with larger implants
  • Switch from saline to silicone implants
  • Replace your textured implants with smooth implants
  • Add more saline to your implant
  • Reposition your implant
  • Add some fat to make the ripples less noticeable

Is There a Breast Implant Warranty?

When you have a breast augmentation with Dr. Sajan, you'll receive a warranty on your implants. If you choose our saline implants, they will come with a ten-year warranty against rupturing, while our silicone implants come with a lifetime warranty against rupturing. Dr. Sajan's primary desire is that you are happy with your breast augmentation.
