Laser skin resurfacing is a procedure used by skilled plastic surgery specialist, Dr. Javad Sajan, to help reduce the visible effects of aging and other skin traumas like acne scarring.

Skin is your body's largest organ and the skin of your face and neck is the most exposed area of your body. Every day, your skin experiences the damaging effects of sunlight, shifting weather conditions, airborne pollutants and particulates, and free radicals. All of these conditions, combined with your own genetic programming and skincare habits, affect how your skin ages.

What Is Laser Skin Resurfacing?

Laser skin resurfacing (also referred to as laser skin rejuvenation or laser peel) is a non-incisional process of removing layers of wrinkled or damaged skin. Dr. Sajan uses a laser process to dissolve the molecular bonds of your damaged skin cells. This dissolving process is done layer by layer until your skin appears smoother and more uniform in texture and color. Resurfacing also stimulates collagen production and development of new skin cells that produce younger and healthier-looking skin as the healing process completes.

Laser skin resurfacing is done on an outpatient basis at our state-licensed surgery center. You will not have to stay overnight. The amount of time, anesthetic, and sedation needed will depend upon how extensive the procedure will be. Your treatment may focus on the wrinkles around your forehead, eyes, and mouth – or your entire face.

Small areas to be treated generally take about 30 to 45 minutes and those areas are numbed with a local anesthetic; you also you may be given a light sedation. General anesthesia may be administered to give you for deeper sedation while larger surfaces of your face and neck are treated. The timeframe for a more extensive full-face treatment is about two hours. You will be kept comfortable and monitored at all times to ensure your safety.

After Your Surgery

Dr. Sajan and his team will work with you through all the pre- and post-op steps. After your procedure, he will bandage the treated areas. You will be instructed to clean the areas four to five times a day following the initial 24 hour recovery period. After cleaning, an ointment (like petroleum jelly) is applied to help prevent scabs from forming.

Post-treatment swelling is normal and Dr. Sajan may prescribe medication to manage any swelling around the eye area. The general period of healing is 10 to 21 days after which you may wear oil-free makeup (to help minimize redness). Resultant redness fades over the course of about three months.

Because layers of skin are removed and delicate new skin cells are forming, it will be important for you to follow Dr. Sajan's recommendations for protecting your skin while it heals. A high SPF sunscreen, protective clothing, and limited exposure to direct sunlight (especially between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.) will be important. Keeping your treated skin moisturized is also very important.
