A hanging belly\u2014sometimes called an apron belly\u2014can have several causes, including those unrelated to weight gain. It can occur in both men and women and tends to happen at an older age versus in younger patients. So, what causes a hanging belly?<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

One of the primary causes of an apron belly is pregnancy, particularly multiple pregnancies. The continued stretching of the skin and muscles with each pregnancy can leave behind extra skin that does not fully retract. Thus, it can hang from the lower abdomen. Stubborn pockets of fat also like to collect in the area.<\/p>\r\n

Next, age is certainly a factor. Younger patients have better skin quality and will see more skin retraction than older patients. Therefore, they tend to have less extra skin in general. With age, the skin and tissues can begin to sag and lose volume which creates a sagging appearance.<\/p>\r\n

Finally, some medical conditions and genetics also contribute to the formation of an apron belly. Hormonal conditions which cause weight fluctuations or extreme weight gain or weight loss<\/a>, diabetes, and other medical conditions can worsen a hanging belly. And, unfortunately, some people are more susceptible to developing a hanging belly purely due to their genetics and body type.<\/p>\r\n
